Islam the Beast from Daniel and the Revelation.  Part 4

MARK OF THE BEAST-  I have mentioned that I feel the creed of Islam is the mark of the beast. A popular American interpretation that we have all heard TV preachers discuss is that the mark of the beast may be a bar code or a transponder tag under the skin or some physical tattoo like marking.

Hear the Scripture:

'           Rev 13:16-17 “It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark.”

'          Rev 14:9-10 “A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: ‘If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, 10 they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb.’”

I think that interpretation is sort of silly.  There is nothing intrinsically evil about bar codes and PC chips.   God doesn't mind if you use bar codes at the grocery store. God doesn't judge you by your skin or the computer operating system that you prefer.  Windows or Apple? It is all good.

Government efforts to reduce identity theft with electronic monitoring and biometric fraud protection are to be commended and eagerly sought after.  We should not have biased ideas about international programs to prevent corruption and crime with digital identification.  These are not to be considered a Satanic conspiracy.   The mark of the beast is not a high tech tattoo or computer chip.  Any sort of a physical marking or literal mark is missing the point. God judges the heart.

Some isolationist type Christians are paranoid about cross cultural learning of foreign languages and customs, cross cultural marriage and social unity. They fear the elimination of multiple currencies, political systems or racial barriers because they think these signs are the beginning of a one world government. For a study of the non-universal nature of the Anti-Christ's kingdom, see my study about a Regional Beast.   The Islamic caliphate is most likely not worldwide.

As for the mark of the beast, during the End-Times, I could envision a situation wherein people accept a physical technology monitoring mark because they want food, but in their heart, they deny the authority of the beast.  It will certainly not be beyond the antichrist's ability and power to sedate people with drugs and then surgically do the mark as an implant or tattoo or whatever literal mark you may envision upon the flesh. These people would then have the mark, yet not be responsible for taking the mark.

Does God torment people with burning sulfur because they possessed a computer chip or received a nasty tattoo, even though their heart was not worshipping Satan?   No.

The mark of the beast is something much deeper and more profound than a subcutaneous ID chip. The mark of the beast is a spiritual mark, not physical in any way.

Do you remember John Walvood's statistic from part 1 of this study?   The Revelation has 404 verses and of them 278 are allusions or direct snippets from the OT.  That is more than half. Revelation is steeped in OT. The language of the Hebrew Scriptures is very strong. Before you jump head long into the interpretation of the Revelation, you  must study the Torah. Allow the bible to interpret itself, and quit listening to those TV preachers.

Any 1st Century Jew reading this book would clearly recognize the borrowing from Moses.  The mark poetically being called on the forehead or the hand is again in itself further evidence for a spiritual heart condition as evidenced by:

'          Ex 13:9 “This [feast of unleavened bread] observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that this law of the LORD is to be on your lips. For the LORD brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand."

'          Deuteronomy 11:18   “Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.”

The book of Revelation is overflowing with these allusions to OT passages. Orthodox Jews have taken this command literally.  Jewish men wear phylacteries.  Phylacteries are little leather boxes containing written Torah verses. They are bound or tied to the forehead and arm to comply with this command found in Deut.   It is a nice gesture and I’m sure we can all use the reminder at times, but I seriously doubt that was God’s original intent when He said to bind his Law upon your forehead and arm.  God meant it figuratively.  God wants His Law to soak in through your forehead and stick to your brain so that you never think evil thoughts.  God wants His Law to merge with your arms so that they never commit evil deeds. It was not the intent for everyone to walk around with small mailboxes tied to the bangs of their head.  God wants His Law to synthesize with our heart. We should metabolize it so that the commands of the Lord become part of our person.    A lawful heart pleases God much more than a leather pouch strapped to the bangs.   Likewise a person who devoutly and adamantly denies Jesus Christ infuriates God much more than a tattoo mark on the hand.

The creed of Islam is a belief system that God (Allah) is exclusively a transcendent spirit that never materializes into a corporal bodily form. The very core fundamental doctrine of Islam denies the incarnation of God into a man. The creed of Islam catastrophically separates God from His creation, and tragically alienates man from the Creator’s salvation. The condition of the heart is that which God looks upon and judges, not markings on the skin.  By definition, the people who accept the mark have made a spiritual decision in their heart. They believe it. This is why God will justly punish them for acceptance of the mark.  Just as phylacteries weren't meant to be taken literally, likewise the mark of the beast is a symbol.  The mark of the beast is an addiction to the religious propaganda of the beast.  The creed of Islam is best understood as the mark of the beast.

DENIAL OF JESUS-   Make no mistake-- Islam is the epitome of Anti-Christ.  Scripture gives us a definition of what the Antichrist is about.

1 John 2:22 (NKJV)   “Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son.”

1 John 4:3(NKJV) 'Every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God; this is the spirit of the antichrist.'

2 John 1:7 (NASV) 'those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in bodily form. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.

A reference to antichrist is also found in  1John 2:18.    All of these are in the epistles of the Beloved Disciple (see my study).  The very definition of antichrist embodies someone who denies Jesus Christ. I’m not talking about a secular modern denial, wherein we don’t do what God admonishes us. You and I do that sometimes. That’s the European/American denial.  Westerners are atheistic and materialistic.   The secular West doesn’t believe in anything.  Modern European world leaders are not Hindu or Buddhist, so I guess most European world leaders would associate themselves as Christian.  Yet they don’t DO what Christ commands them to do. That is not the sort of denial I’m talking about.

These books were written by the Beloved Disciple in the 1st century when paganism was everywhere.  During this time, you must acknowledge that Caesar is god, the son of Zeus. Caesar is the son of god, not some guy that died in Jerusalem a few years back. If you stick to your guns that Jesus is the true Son of God, the ancient pagans will feed you to the lions (and eat snacks while they watch with glee).  In the 1st century, the context of these epistles, the denial of Jesus is an active, violent, proclaiming denial of Jesus.   This is the same denial of the Son that is regularly seen in the Islamic world.    I suggest that Islam not only is an antichrist, it will become the Anti-Christ.    Islam will violently and religiously persecute the true saints of God in the last day.

What about the POPE?-This requirement for an active violent denial of the deity of Jesus, IMHO, exonerates the Catholic Church. This same passage in 1 John also says: "Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God."

During the Reformation,  John Calvin believed that the Pope and Catholic Church were the Anti-Christ and Beast. As you can imagine, during the 16th century the pope was not a popular guy in Switzerland. You've probably heard about Rome being the whore of Babylon, the idea is still around today. I have a number of theological disputes with the Catholic Church.  I think some of their doctrines are wrong. But fundamentally, and this is the key: They acknowledge Jesus as Lord and Savior.  Catholics accept all of the high points of Christianity: The Virgin birth, the Incarnation of God as a human, the Deity of Jesus in the flesh, Jesus as Messiah of Israel and Savior of mankind. They might be confused on a handful of topics, but aren't we all?  Fundamentally, Catholics are Christians. As such they are not eligible by these biblical definitions for the pagan, Satan worshiping beast that will actively and violently deny Jesus as the atoning Christ.

For further evidence, see also 1Cor 12:3 NIV "Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, 'Jesus be cursed,' and no one can say, 'Jesus is Lord,' except by the Holy Spirit."

TWO FOLD ASSAULT OF ISLAM

1 John 2:22 (NKJV)  "Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son."

We are again told about the denial of father and son by Jesus in John 16.    Chapters 14-17 are a lecture given by Christ after the Last Supper while still in the upper room with his disciples.  Jesus gives a little sermon. It is called the upper room discourse.

John 16:1-3 (NKJV)  “These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble.  They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers a service to God. And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.”

This  is an amazing verse.    Jesus predicted that when they kill you in days to come, they will think that they are righteously serving God.   Does that sound like atheistic Europeans or jihadist Muslims? The people of the beast are highly religious. They worship the beastly system. The secular West really doesn’t qualify for this idolatrous blasphemous pagan religion of the beast. The beast demands worship, it is a religion.   This doesn't mean that they are worshipping some guy, that is sort of silly. It means that they are worshipping within a religion. A religion that does not know the father nor the son.

Jesus fortells that they will do these things “because they have not known the Father nor Me.”   Again, here Jesus tells us about the two fold doctrine of Anti-Christ.   The denial of the Father- Yahweh of Israel and of the Son- Yeshua, the Christ.

SHAHADA - ISLAMIC CREED

There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is Allah’s (apostle, prophet, messenger, sent-one)

The Arabic word shahada literally means to testify.  This is the creed of Islam.  The Shahada claims that Allah is the only One True Supreme God. This is an assault against Yahweh, the Father.  It is a denial of the God of Jacob, His name is YaHWeH, not Allah.

The Shahada claims that Muhammad is the final prophet, the authoritative messenger or apostle of Allah.   This is an assault against Yeshua, the Son.   Islam embodies a direct denial of Yeshua as Messiah and Lord.

Exodus 3:13-15   “God also said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites, 'Yahweh, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.”

YHWH-      When God revealed himself to Moses, he said that my name forever is YHWH. It is a blessed name that we ourselves and don’t use enough.  I encourage to use the powerful name YHWH in your prayers; any which way that you like to pronounce it is fine (see my study on the name YHWH).   God’s name is YHWH, it most certainly is not Allah.

Quran in sura 5:17 is calling us blasphemers. Ironic, isn't it?   According to Islam, Allah is not a father. He has no children. Allah is a transcendent, non-relationship god. It is below his dignity to incarnate into a frail weak human.
The point I want to strongly make is that Islam violently denies the deity of Jesus. It is Anti-Christ according to the clear direct passage of 1 John 2:22, worth repeating here:

"Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son."

I suggest that Islam not only is an anti-christ, it will become the Anti-Christ.  Wearing the mark of the beast in their heart, they will violently and religiously persecute the true saints of God.

CONCLUSION- This finally brings us to the conclusion.  Let’s take our clue from the angel that talked to Daniel. After Daniel had had these visions he was terribly confused.   Daniel didn’t understand a lot of what he had seen and heard.    The angel speaks to Daniel:

Dan 12:4  “But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.”

Dan 12:9  “He replied, ‘Go your way, Daniel, because the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end.’”

Some popular commentators think that verse 4 is referring to jet travel and computer Internet knowledge. It has been fulfilled in our day. The headlines and experiences of my life are written in the Bible. I’m sorry, but that’s totally out of context. The angel is telling Daniel to chill out. It doesn’t matter if you understand or not, because all of these prophecies are relating to a period in the distant future. At that time, when the time is right, then the meaning of the book will be revealed and understood by the saints. Until then, the words are closed up.

The Hebrew word for back and forth/ to and fro is also used in other Scriptures.

'          2 Chron16:9    “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth.”

The eyes of God figuratively go back and forth, to and fro, up/down and around the whole world. The meaning, of course, is that nothing escapes His observation.

'          Amos 8:12 “they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.”

Amos predicts the blindness of Israel as explained by Apostle Paul in Romans 9.   Israel will run to and fro, yet be confounded and not find God because of unbelief and blindness for the sake of gentiles.

The correct understanding of “run to and fro” in Daniel 12:4 is similarly figurative.  Many believers in the last days will have their eyes going back forth across the pages of this prophecy. They will be reading and studying their Bible. As they go back and forth rereading the passages over and over again with great intent to learn, then knowledge and understanding of the prophecy will increase. Understanding of the prophecy is the context of this discussion with the angel. Remember, Daniel was upset because he did not understand. This is all 1 sentence or one thought in Hebrew. It is not 2 different sentences: JetTravel and Internet. This is one single integral thought.   The knowledge will increase because they went back and forth. In Hebrew it actually says THE knowledge.  The definite article ‘the’ is used. What knowledge? The knowledge of the prophecy.    This is the context of what has been troubling Daniel.

Although I believe many commentators are mistaken on the interpretation of that passage, what they are driving at is correct. I agree that we are in the end days.   I believe that the book of Daniel is starting to open up right in front of our eyes.  You and I have this morning been going to and fro. I hope the understanding of this prophecy has started to open up for us.

You know what that means don’t you?   It means that the beast is coming; but more importantly, and this is what we need to focus on, it means that Jesus is coming soon.

Maranatha Lord Jesus!
